Christopher Blythe
Research Associate

Christopher James Blythe is a Research Associate at the Maxwell Institute’s Laura F. Willes Center for Book of Mormon Studies. Blythe comes to the Institute after three years of working for the Joseph Smith Papers as a documentary editor.

In the 2014-2015 academic year, Blythe worked as a pre-doctoral teaching fellow for the Religious Studies Department at Utah State University, teaching courses in American Religious History and Religious Studies theory. Blythe obtained his PhD from Florida State University in American Religious History in 2015. He received a master’s degree in History from Utah State University in 2011, as well as bachelor’s degrees from Utah State University and Texas A&M University in Religious Studies and Anthropology, respectively.

Blythe’s work has appeared in a number of academic journals including the Journal of Book of Mormon Studies, BYU Studies, the Journal of Religion, Journal of the Bible and Its Reception, Material Religion, and Nova Religio. He currently serves as assistant editor for the Journal of Mormon History.

At the Institute he is currently working on a cultural history of Book of Mormon geography.
