News of the Nibley Fellows in 2013

The Maxwell Institute’s Nibley Fellowship Program supports full-time graduate students working in religious studies and ancient studies by providing stipends and grants. For many of our previous Nibley Fellows 2013 was a good year. Some have gone on to contribute directly to the work of the Maxwell Institute, while others have been distinguished elsewhere in the academy. To these we extend our gratitude and congratulations:

Joseph Spencer (2013-14) was appointed associate editor of the Journal of Book of Mormon Studies.

Dan Belnap (1998-2005) advanced to the rank of associate professor of Ancient Scripture (Religious Education, BYU).

Lincoln Blumell (2003-8) received the F. W. Beare Award for his Lettered Christians: Christians, Letters, and Late Antique Oxyrhynchus (Leiden/Boston: Brill, 2012).

Morgan Davis (1999-2001) is the associate editor for the first volume of the Mormon Studies Review (Maxwell Institute, 2014).

Matthew Grey (2003-8) and Lincoln Blumell organized the conference Approaching Antiquity: Joseph Smith’s Study of the Ancient World (March 2013).

Carl Griffin (1995-98) was appointed the editor of Studies in the Bible and Antiquity after serving for seven years as the associate editor.

Brian Hauglid (1996-97) was appointed Director of the Laura F. Willes Center for Book of Mormon Studies and editor of the Journal of Book of Mormon Studies, stepping down as the editor of Studies in the Bible and Antiquity after five splendid issues.

Kristian S. Heal (1996-97) published “The Syriac History of Joseph: A New Translation and Introduction” in volume 1 of Old Testament Pseudepigrapha: More Noncanonical Scriptures.

Blair Hodges (2011) was hired full-time as the Maxwell Institute’s public communications specialist.

David Larsen (2008-11) was awarded his PhD from the University of St. Andrews.

Boyd Petersen (1998-2001) published Dead Wood and Rushing Water: Essays on Mormon Faith, Culture, and Family (Kofford, 2013).

Taylor Petrey (2001-2) was appointed Lucinda Hinsdale Stone Assistant Professor of Religion.

Mark Wright (2003-8) was appointed associate editor of the Journal of Book of Mormon Studies.
